Daniel Juncadella will return to racing Mercedes machinery in the DTM this year as GruppeM Racing’s selected driver for the GT3-based series.

Juncadella, who was named as a Mercedes-AMG factory driver earlier this year, will pilot the GruppeM team’s single Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.

The 29-year-old Spaniard previously represented Mercedes in the DTM for five seasons including a continuous stretch until the end of 2016 and a single term in 2018.

Following the end of Mercedes’ involvement in the Class One era at the end of that latter season, Juncadella joined the R-Motorsport Aston Martin program for 2019.

Juncadella did not hold a full-time drive in any series last year but contested the Nürburgring 24 in a Mercedes-AMG run by German outfit 10Q Racing Team.

“We welcome Dani to Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM Racing for 2021 and really look forward to the challenge together with Mercedes-AMG,” said GruppeM Racing team principal Kenny Chen.

“We have been so successful in our relationship together with Mercedes-AMG as a performance team, winning many races in the last few years and we looking forward to continuing that success.”

Hong Kong-flagged organization GruppeM was the first team to commit to the DTM’s new GT3 era back in November.

It will direct its campaign from a permanent European base near Mercedes-AMG’s headquarters in Germany.
