Motorsports In Action has purchased a brand-new McLaren 720S GT3 ahead of a targeted step up into North American GT3 competition in 2022 according to team owner Eric Kerub.

The race-winning IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge operation, which currently campaigns a McLaren 570S GT4 for Spencer Pigot and Sheena Monk, completed a shakedown of the GT3 car at Circuit Mont-Tremblant earlier this week.

Kerub explained that the decision was made to purchase a 720S GT3 after studying Compass Racing’s performance with the car in the WeatherTech Sprint Cup races last year, coupled with the its improved reliability and success in endurance races over the winter.

The Canadian team has set its sights on either a WeatherTech SportsCar Championship or Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS program for next year.

“Last year we decided that if we were going to make a go at a GT3 program with some drivers/clients/sponsors, we did not want to be in a situation whereby we would be attempting to sell a program without a car,” Kerub told Sportscar365.

“If we wanted to be remotely competitive, we needed to get the car and run it, have the team take it apart to understand all the systems and be familiar with how everything works and gets removed/installed so we are competent come race weekend.

“The end game is to attract a program for 2022 in either IMSA or SRO.

“Having the car now allows us to offer private tests for potential clients and gets us real data on operation costs per our internal protocols.”

Kerub indicated that there’s no rush to put the car on the grid this year, with the team taking a more long-term approach.

MIA is currently in the planning stages of making further outings in Canada this year to gather more data and generate interest.

“This past weekend was just a shakedown with a basic alignment/setup to run through all the systems,” Kerub said.

“The car is no doubt leaps and bounds over our 650S GT3. We’ll be running further track days and probably run some local club races to get more acclimated with the platform.

“Hopefully we can generate some interest prior to next season.”

Having made the switch from McLaren to Acura GT3 machinery for this year, Compass is understood to be in the process of selling its 720S GT3 to a collector.
