Robin Liddell stretched his fuel over an hour and nursed an ailing race car home to score victory in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Alan Jay Automotive Group 120 at Sebring International Raceway.
Liddell, who shares his Rebel Rock Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R with Frank DePew, coasted to a halt mere feet after taking the checkered flag after an impressive fuel economy run that also saw the car spewing clouds of smoke in the final fifteen minutes.
The car received a black flag as an advisory for the smoke but was not required to come to the pits according to the NBC Sports broadcast.
The Wright Motorsports pairing of Jan Heylen and Max Root took second after starting up front in the No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport courtesy of a pole run from Root who is deputizing for Ryan Hardwick after injuries sustained in a practice crash at Daytona.
Root controlled the pace during the opening stint before turning the car over to Heylen. The Belgian cycled back to front in final ten minutes as the pit stop strategy played out but couldn’t run down the ailing Camaro.
Bill Auberlen and Dillon Machavern took third overall for Turner Motorsport ahead of Trent Hindman and Alan Brynjolfsson in the No. 7 Volt Racing with Archangel Aston Martin Vantage GT4 which overcame an early race drive-through penalty for avoidable contact to secure fourth place.
There was only one full course yellow over the course of the two hour event which came late in the first hour when the No. 40 PF Racing Ford Mustang GT4 cut a tire and left debris on the racing surface.
Road Shagger Racing Holds On for TCR Victory
Jon Morley and Gavin Ernstone scored their first victory of the 2021 season, bouncing back from a heavy crash at the opening round of the championship at Daytona.
The pairing in the No. 61 Road Shagger Racing Audi RS3 LMS entry jumped to the lead in the final 30 minutes when Mikey Taylor was forced to pit lane from the lead with an axle issue in the JDC-Miller Motorsports Audi.
It was the first race for Morley and Ernstone with the sequential gearbox and they used it to great effect as they run up front throughout the two hour race and had to hold off a hard charge from Mat Pombo in the final minutes.
Pombo ran down Morley during the final stint but ultimately settled for second in the No. 73 LA Honda World Honda Civic Type R TCR that he shares with Mike LaMarra.
Michael Lewis was third in the No. 77 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai Veloster N TCR.
The No. 5 KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR of Roy Block and Tim Lewis.
RESULTS: Alan Jay Automotive Group 120
